Born in Jerusalem, Elad Gabbay absorbed the Babylonian Piyyut from a young age by listening to his father, the Cantor Moshe Gabbay. A graduate of Bar Ilan University in Musicology, Gabbay is a Paytan of the Turkish and Babylonian traditions in Kehilot Sharot (the Singing Communities Organization) as well as a singer, musician, and musical director of Piyyut and world music performances in Israel and across the globe.
Mastering the Qanun through intensive studies in Istanbul, Turkey, Gabbay is currently one of the leading Qanun players in Israel. He is also an accomplished Oud player, releasing his solo album Through the Qanun and the Oud in 2002. Gabbay teaches music, piyyut, and music theory at the Center for Middle Eastern Classical Music in Jerusalem.
