Yaniv Raba is a composer and oud player. He initiates and takes part in various world-music projects in Israel. Raba comes from a family of Libyan-Jewish hazzanim (cantors), and has studied the oud in Istanbul with the Turkish oud master Yurdal Tokcan.
Raba regularly collaborates with a variety of musicians and musical groups, such as Adumey Hasefatot (with Berry Sakharof and Rea Mochiach), Peretz Eliyahu, and Yinon Muallem’s Rast Ensemble to name a few.
Since 2010, he has been leading a project of Libyan piyyutim (Jewish liturgical songs), researching and collecting the music he grew up on as a child of a Libyan Jewish immigrant family. A collection of Libyan piyyutim arranged and produced by Raba with Yankale Segal and performed by the Libyans Ensemble, has recently been released on a new album named Wandering – Sacred Jewish Music from Libya.
